What it is:
VLDL cholesterol is produced in the liver and its function is to transport triglycerides, which are a type of fat present in the body by the bloodstream to be stored in the cells and used for energy production.
The VLDL is considered a bad cholesterol along with LDL , because their high levels in the blood cause the accumulation of fat in the arteries and plaque formation of atherosclerosis , increasing the risk of heart disease .
The low amount of VLDL cholesterol has no consequence for the health of the individual, it indicates little presence of triglycerides and fat in the body . On the other hand , high VLDL cholesterol should be controlled since it accelerates the onset of atherosclerosis and increases the chances of getting heart and metabolic diseases .
Reference values for VLDL cholesterol
The reference values of VLDL cholesterol are :
Low : below 30 mg / dl
